Diet matters, but seasonality matters more2026-10-29

In our last study published in Animal Microbiome, we investigated how diet and seasonal dynamics shape microbial communities in gilthead seabream across the gut, skin, inlet water, and rearing water.

The results showed that time and seasonality had a stronger influence on microbiome structure than diet. Despite this, the gut microbiome maintained a stable core over time, while the skin and rearing-water microbiomes displayed parallel seasonal dynamics.

These findings highlight the importance of considering temporal and environmental variation when evaluating nutritional interventions. They also support the potential use of the rearing-water microbiome as a non-invasive monitoring tool in precision aquaculture.
