Fish microbiome research highlighted at MHA 20262026-09-25
The IATS-CSIC Nutrigenomics Group participated in the 4th International Symposium Mucosal Health in Aquaculture (MHA 2026), held in Barcelona, one of the leading international meetings dedicated to fish mucosal health, host-microbiota interactions and sustainable aquaculture.
During the symposium, Dr. Federico Moroni delivered the oral presentation “Depicting Host Genetics, Epigenetics, and Gut Microbiome Dynamics to Improve Resilience in Farmed Fish”, highlighting ongoing research on the interplay between host genetics, epigenetic regulation and gut microbial communities in shaping fish resilience. The work also showcased the application of Bayesian network modelling and other computational approaches to unravel complex host-microbiota interactions in aquaculture species.
The group also presented the poster “Production system shapes microbial dynamics across the water-skin-gut axis during Nile tilapia development”, resulting from an AQUAEXCEL3.0 Transnational Access project awarded to Luisa Villamil (Universidad de La Sabana, Colombia) conducted at IATS infrastructure. The study explores how recirculating aquaculture and aquaponic systems shape microbial communities across environmental and fish-associated compartments.
