Researchers from the IATS present new advances in gilthead sea bream genomics at the 8th Genomics in Aquaculture 20262026-05-22

Aldo Hernández Juárez and Fernando Naya Català, representing the IATS Fish Nutrigenomics and Integrative Biology group, attended the international symposium “8th Genomics in Aquaculture 2026,” held in Split (Croatia). There, Aldo presented the results of a graph genome of gilthead sea bream developed using novel long-read sequencing techniques. Based on this work, new structural variants have been identified that are associated with genes of high adaptive value for the species, linked to biological age profiles and thermal tolerance functions.

The study, carried out in collaboration with the Center of Integrative Genetics (CIGENE) at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (NMBU), contributes to a better understanding of structural variability in sea bream populations and sheds light on the diversification of their thermal and welfare responses under a climate change scenario.

This work has been conducted within the projects BreamHOLOBIONT (PID2023-146990OB-I00), TOMACUA (CIAICO/2024/281), BrINFLAMMAGING (CIACIF/2024/018), and CSIC-MOMENTUM (MMT24-IATS-01-01).
